David Herrera, a principal energy healer, wrote that to become a Reiki healer, one must be harmonized with the Reiki energy. Reiki Attunement process is a ritual in which a student is ready to provide the ability to access and use of Reiki. In this ceremony, Reiki master creates an energy pattern around the receiver of the attunement using the different hand gestures and symbols. This ceremony is basically consists of chanting and meditation. Those symbols are drawn by the master above the student’s head.

Reiki is divided into two categories: traditional Reiki and non-traditional Reiki. Traditional Reiki involves only three levels of attunement, while non-traditional Reiki has three to a dozen levels or more. In the first level of traditional Reiki healing, the hands-on ability is taught. This is the introductory level of being a Reiki healer. At this point, would-be practitioners are taught on how to heal directly through the traditional Reiki hand positions with their emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual significance. Also, this level includes discussions on Reiki history and various associations with other practices.

The second level not only increases the ability introduced in level one but also teach healing at a distance. Three out of the four traditional symbols are taught, resulting to an increase in the magnitude of the spiritual power that may be used by the student. This level also includes a discussion of the symbols and their origins and specific uses. If level one requires four initiations, this level only requires two.

In the third level of attunement, the fourth and final symbol, which is the Master Symbol, is taught. Like the first level, it also requires four initiations, and results to an increase in power. This level is basically for personal growth and transformation and more enlightenment for the practitioner. Psychic surgery is also taught in this level so as to remove energy blocks. Energy Grids are also taught to students so that they may be able to bring more light and love in the planet and to remove difficult energy blocks.

As said earlier, Traditional Reiki only has three levels. But there are some sources that include the Master Teacher Level. In this level, the practitioner is given the ability to train other Reiki practitioners. This level requires a deep commitment for the student to make Reiki as his or her lifestyle. This level teaches more advanced techniques such as energy activation, balance, direction and modulation for healing, and transformation, among others. For some teachers, this level is not separated from the third level. But unlike the first three levels, this does not require any more attunements. The Reiki practitioner who advances to this level goes on a form of discipleship or apprenticeship with an experienced Master Teacher.

There are many organizations and institutions across the United States that offer training for Reiki practitioners. Anyone who wishes to have his or her energy channels opened, or anyone who wants the ability to control his life energy can join a Reiki training session. Commitment and dedication are only a few of what is needed for one to become a certified Reiki practitioner and master.
